Lower Operating Costs Now Require Integrated Team Structures and BIM
Warning: Today, capital projects for science facilities (new construction or renovations) targeting low operating and lifecycle costs or LEED Gold and Platinum certification must be done with integrated project team structures and Building Information Modeling (BIM). In this session, Steve Frei and Paul Erickson prove that proposition with concrete examples of how team integration and BIM work to overcome the traditional organizational and financial roadblocks to high-performance results for science building capital projects. They profile the new project delivery processes, financial and project metrics being achieved, and details on cost-reducing LEED solutions.

Reduce Operational Costs Through Data Center Design
In today's economy, operational costs are always viewed with a microscope. Everyone asks how to lower operating costs without losing availability and reliability. Numerous factors must be considered when designing a new data center or upgrading an existing one; electrical costs and maintenance are most important. This presentation shows attendees how to reduce overall operational costs whether it involves building a data center from scratch or bringing an existing one up to date.

Integrating Sustainability and Climate Action Planning with the Comprehensive Master Plan
As many universities commit to measurable environmental goals, planners are exploring strategies for integrating sustainability into the master planning process. One of the key challenges is incorporating measurable goals at a planning level when much of the required information and data are not readily available. This workshop will review emerging methodologies for evaluating environmental performance indicators and for integrating sustainability into a comprehensive master plan, with an emphasis on energy and emission planning.

Planning and Building Sustainable Campuses
Sustainable campus development goes beyond LEED buildings, and yet little guidance is available on a broader approach to sustainability. This two-day program focuses on direct application of techniques and strategies that advance the concept of sustainable design for campuses. Key topics include campus systems best practices, planning for a reduced carbon footprint, making sustainable campus communities, and sustainable planning in an international context.
