Fire Alarm Design and Implementation

In this session we will discuss the design of new and renovated fire alarm systems. We will present the applicability of various components including smoke detectors, beam detectors, heat detectors, duct detectors, and VESDA systems. We will review the design parameters of voice evacuation systems. We will review various "rule of thumb" and code minimums. We will focus on renovation and the specific issues that arise when adding onto or modifying an existing system including operation during construction, testing, back-up and capacity. Mechanical systems that interface with the fire alarm system will be presented include air pressurization, smoke purge, smoke dampers and stair pressurization. Specific regulations for high-rise buildings will be presented including fire command centers, fire fighters communications, mechanical smoke controls and elevator annunciator.

Putting the "Action" into Climate Action Planning
Presenter: Mike Walters, LEED® AP
Climate action plans are the necessary first step in reducing campus energy and associated carbon emissions. Explore the often more substantial implementation challenges to realizing tangible results.

Surpassing the Roadblocks in Incorporating Measurement and Verification into the Building Design Process
Presenters: Jeannette LeBoyer, LEED® AP and Fred Betz, PhD, LEED® AP

Measurement and verification of building systems offers the capability to understand how people use buildings and how energy efficiency technologies perform in real-world settings. Examine such challenges as value-engineering, building design liability, and understanding of benefits.

New HVAC Design Concept for Rodent Rooms at UF - a Multifunctional, Cost-saving Model

The University of Florida has an innovative new rodent holding room concept that increases net holding space, reduces energy use, and improves the maintainability of equipment - and meets NIH facility grant design requirements with less capital. Here, session leaders detail features of this new solution based on a flexible HVAC controls strategy that increases space utilization, control system sequencing that lowers energy use, and the application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for holding rooms and planning for the future maintainability of equipment. They compare energy, space, cost, and commissioning results to previous UF vivarium projects.

BIM Status Check:
Where Is It Now? Where Is It Going? How Will It Impact Future Healthcare Projects?

AEI is a developmental advisor working with AutoDesk to refine and reconcile its industry-standard BIM platforms, ABS and Revit. Recently designing the 1.3 million-square-foot, 24-story Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, AEI had occasion to put these three-dimensional, integrated design tools to a demanding test. AEI had to devise hybrid solutions to effect functional coordination and achieve BIM delivery goals, compensating for ABS capacity shortcomings and customizing programs to better synch document transfer. This presentation provides a full present view and elaborates on the questions remaining to be answered concerning BIM.
