Affiliated Engineers, Inc. and APPA publish The Educational Facilities Professional’s Practical Guide to Reducing the Campus Carbon Footprint - March, 2009
Madison, WI – Affiliated Engineers, Inc. (AEI) has partnered with APPA, the association of higher education facilities professionals, to develop and publish a guide to help higher education institutions accomplish the carbon footprint reduction goals represented by the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), and identify best practices for incorporating sustainability concepts into their operating cultures. Released this month, The Educational Facilities Professional’s Practical Guide to Reducing the Campus Carbon Footprint provides a tool to support the role of facilities professionals in future sustainable planning for their institutions.
In keeping with energy and resource conservation objectives, the Guide can be found at http://appa.org/tools/measures/tls.cfm. The Guide has been designed for all higher education institutions that want to reduce their campus carbon footprints, regardless of whether they have signed the ACUPCC.
“Colleges and universities are leading a major institutional ground-shift in their responses to climate change,” said AEI principal and energy services group leader Jerry Schuett. “These are among the most urgent social and economic – as well as environmental – challenges of our time and, as engineering professionals, we have a fundamental commitment to addressing them.” The Guide provides a practical framework for educational facilities professionals to exercise their prominent central role in implementing campus carbon footprint reduction goals, organizing inventory, tactical planning, and investment into ten strategic categories:
- Conservation and energy efficiency
- Energy production and procurement
- Green construction and renovation
- Space utilization
- Transportation
- Waste reduction and recycling
- Procurement
- Food services
- Education and research
- Outreach and awareness
Published as a web document, the Guide is a dynamic resource that will be updated continually to reflect technological advances and current legislation.
