Daylighting & Electric Lighting
Daylighting and supplemental electric lighting are significant visual components of architectural environments. In acknowledgement of the importance of lighting, consulting engineering firms are demonstrably more concerned with the architect's aesthetic objectives than ever before. One reason for this is the fact that the majority of all lighting design in the built environment is specified by engineering companies, not lighting design firms. Lighting designers and interior designers are now included on engineering staffs because their work is viewed as being essential to supporting the whole building integration effort. Providing the best visual environment is the task of architect, engineer and lighting designer alike.
Just as architecture is considered the mother of all of the arts, daylighting is considered the cornerstone for all sustainable building activities because it carries with it the forces that govern many other energy conservation efforts. Solar orientation, shading and penetration as well as seasonal solar energy availability studies should be considered part and parcel of the lighting designer's schematic phase basic services. All lighting designs begin with daylighting strategies and electric lighting is often designed to supplement, rather than replace, natural daylight.
Pivotal Lighting Design, the internal lighting studio of Affiliated Engineers, is comprised of a group of talented lighting designers with expertise, technical knowledge and a wide experience base in all aspects of daylighting and lighting design.
