“Immediately surrounding the new chiller plant are several student dorms, a private neighborhood, a performing arts center, and a cemetery listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I think one of the greatest achievements of the project is that you almost can’t even tell it’s there.”

Cobb Chiller Plant and Parking Deck The beast in the garden. The continuing and projected growth of UNC Chapel Hill's already dense main campus indicated both chilled water and parking shortages. The ideal utility site was prominently adjacent to the Paul Green Theater and the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. AEI planned and designed a chiller plant with five 2,000-ton, 4160 volt centrifugal type chillers and five 2,000-ton counter-flow type cooling tower cells, wrapped it in a deferentially modeled 470-vehicle parking ramp, and surrounded it with tennis courts and landscaped open space. The towers, on the roof of the plant and upper levels of the parking deck, are enclosed by full height walls shielding view and sound. The project includes 6,200 feet of chilled water distribution piping, completing critical loops in the campus distribution system, and 7,500 feet of new electrical duct bank.
