“The chances of significant external project challenges increase with the density of existing or additional development of the project site. The same can be said of adjacency opportunities, presenting challenges of their own.”

North carolina CANCER HOSPITAL Coordinate your way through conflicts. The footprint for the new 429,000 sf North Carolina Cancer Hospital, including 324,000 sf clinical Cancer Center and 105,000 sf Physician’s Office Building, bisected the existing main hospital chilled water distribution loop. Four other concurrent major construction projects on the UNC Hospital campus combined to affect electrical duct banks, oxygen utilities, storm water, steam tunnel, and traffic flow to the campus's only ambulance entrance. Lateral adjacency opportunities dictated thirteen-foot floor spacing on three levels. AEI designed temporary piping connections to preserve chilled water service during construction, capitalizing on the opportunity to create a new walkable tunnel spanning the length of the new hospital and accommodating upsizing. AEI met monthly with the four other owner, designer, and contractor teams to combine timelines and compare phasing diagrams to avoid potential future project conflicts. Perfect storm passed, the facility openened in August 2009. Services: Mechanical, Electrical, Piping/Plumbing, Technology, Architectural Lighting Design, Utility Infrastructure,
