North Campus Expansion Design
The Methodist Hospital System

Projected $1 million in annual energy cost savings.

AEI’s upgrade of The Methodist Hospital’s central utility plant will increase steam system capacity from 120,000 pounds per hour to 170,000 pounds per hour, increase cooling tower capacity, and increase chilled water production capacity from 10,000 tons to 14,800 tons total. The new combined heat and power system (CHP) with gas-driven turbine electrical power generator and heat recovery steam boiler will produce 4.3 MW of electrical power. With no space available within or around the existing facility, the upgrades are configured with the cogeneration unit and cooling towers on the roof. The CHP system provides the opportunity to identify appropriate production equipment (electric, steam, or gas) and match production capabilities with available capacities. With a difference between base project cost and CHP project cost of $14 million, and an estimated $1 million annual energy cost savings with the CHP, the upgrade from base project to CHP project has a 14-year return on investment.
